Ebenezer H. James served as a Private in Company A of the 121st Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regiment in the American Civil War.

He enlisted in the 121st Pennsylvania on August 23, 1862.

He was wounded in action on July 1, 1863 while fighting with his regiment south of Herbst's Woods, west of Gettysburg.

He died of tetanus on July 15 at the 3rd Division, I Corps hospital, and was initially buried in the Associate Reformed Graveyard in Gettysburg.

He was later reinterred in the Pennsylvania Plot in the Gettysburg National Cemetery in Section G, Site #10.
