U.S. Congressman. Educated at South Dakota State University, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1887 and practiced law in Brookings, South Dakota. He was prosecuting attorney for Brookings County, (1892-98), a member of the South Dakota State Senate, (1901-03) and South Dakota Attorney General, (1902-06). In 1907, he was elected as a Republican to the Sixtieth Congress, serving until 1909. An unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law until his death at age 72.
