Martha was the daughter of Demarquis Dews Hix and Malinda Stewart. On 7 March 1850, she married Mitchell E.W. Dunaway. They had 2 children: Malvina Frances 'Fannie' Elizabeth Dunaway (1856-1919) and Mitchell Ewing Dunaway Jr. (1870-1950).
