HENRETTA POWELL RUSSELL CALLED BY DEATH

Last Sunday, August 16th, Mrs. Henretta Powell Russell, well known and highly esteemed pioneer of this community ,was called by death. Mrs. Russell was past 93 years of age and her death ended one of the most active and useful as well as one of the longest lives of the inhabitants of Millard County. She was of the hardy pioneer type, the kind of woman that overcomes difficulties as they come and with ceaseless effort continues onward with courage undaunted. If we owe anything to the Utah Pioneers, certainly we must pay high tribute to the memory of this good lady who was one of the most strong, courageous, cheerfully energetic among them.

Mrs. Russell was born in Scotland in the year 1831. During her girlhood she was converted and became a member of the Latter-Day Saint faith. At the age of 25 she immigrated into this country and crossed the plains with the pioneers of 1856 to Utah. It is reported that she walked the entire distance across the plains, the wagon with which her party came being too heavily loaded for her to ride. Upon her arrival in Salt Lake Valley, she lived with one Bishop Hunter and his family and later she married Bishop John L. Butler of Spanish Fork. Some time later Bishop Butler died leaving her with two children, a little boy and a little girl. In the year 1864 she married John Powell and moved to Deseret, Millard County. There the Powell family continued to live until the Deseret Dam in the Sevier River washed out and then they moved to Meadow and from there to Fillmore. In 1885 Mr. and Mrs. Powell went at the invitation of the church to St. George where they did ordinance work for nine months in the St. George Temple.

In the Latter part of her life, Mrs. Russell did a great deal of temple work, laboring in all four of the temples in this state. She married Allen Russell and that good couple spent 10 years doing work for the dead in the Manti Temple. All her life, Mrs. Russell has been unfaltering in her faith and a very active church worker. She was mother to 9 children, 7 girls and 2 boys, three of whom are dead: Isabelle Butler, Henretta Powell, and Mrs. Ellen Kelly. She is survived by John W. Butler, Sarah Bartholomew, Anne Beckwith, Lillie Rogers, Alma Powell and May Rasmussen.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon in the Fillmore Ward Chapel, Bishop Parker Robison presiding. The speakers were T. Clark Callister and F. Alonzo Robison both of whom gave a glowing account of Mrs. Russell's exemplary life. F. Earl Stott rendered a vocal solo accompanied by his daughter Reta. Services were opened by brother Frank Partridge and the benediction was offered by Wm. B. Higgins. The remains were placed in the Fillmore cemetery, brother F. Alonzo Robison dedicated the grave.
