Originally from Suffield, Connecticut, she was the daughter of John Kent and Sarah Smith. She married John Wheeler Leavitt in 1820 who became a prominent New York City businessman. His once successful business collapsed by the 1850s however, and their daughter Cecilia died due to complications from childbirth. They took in this daughter's two children and raised them, one of them the future famous painter Cecilia Beaux. Young Cecilia was very fond of her grandmother, and later cited her as the most important figure in shaping her life. Cecilia painted her grandmother in 1885, shown here.
