US Congressman. He was a successful bussinessman in timber, lumber and naval stores in southern Alabama. During World War I, he served as an Alabama official in shipbuilding companies. In 1935, he was elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-fourth Congress and to the next thirteen succeeding Congresses, serving until 1963. An unsuccessful candidate for renomination, he was convicted in July 1963, on charges of conspiracy and conflict-of-interest by using his congressional influence to gain dismissal of mail fraud charges against J. Kenneth Edlin. He was fined, served six months probation and received full pardon from President Johnson in 1965. He returned to his many business activities and died at age 84 in Washington, D.C.
