U.S. Congressman. After graduating from the University of Alabama in July 1861, he served the Civil War as a Lieutenant in the 1st Battalion of Alabama Artillery, Confederate Army. After the war, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1867 and commenced to practice law in Dayton, Alabama. He was State solicitor for Marengo County, (1872-76) and prosecuting attorney of the seventh judicial circuit, (1876-77). In 1889, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-first Congress and to the next three succeeding Congresses, serving until 1897. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he was a member of the Alabama State House of Representatives, (1900-01) and practiced law until his death at age 63.
