Civil War Union Army Officer. Commissioned Captain and commander of Company A, 13th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on August 22, 1861, and fought with his unit at the Battles of Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsvile and Gettysburg. On December 28, 1863 he was transferred to the 3rd New Jersey Volunteer cavalry, and was promoted to Major. Served with the cavalry until his resignation from the service on October 18, 1864.
