U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Hillsdale College Michigan, in 1928, from George Washington University Law School, Washington, D.C., in 1933, was admitted to the Indiana bar in 1933 and commenced the practice of law in Fort Wayne, Indiana. During World War II, he served as a Second Lieutenant in the Quartermaster Corps, U.S. Army Reserve, (1941-45). After the war, he was probate commissioner of Allen County, Indiana, (1945-50). In 1951, he was elected as a Republican to the Eighty-second Congress and to the next nine succeeding Congresses, serving until 1971. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he served as Ambassador to Ethiopia, (1971-74). He then resumed the practice of law until his death at age 75.
