Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. Served in the Civil War as a Private in Company D, 104th Illinois Volunteer Infantry. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery at Elk River, Tennessee on July 2, 1863. His citation reads "Voluntarily joined a small party that, under a heavy fire, captured a stockade and saved the bridge". His Medal was awarded to him on October 30, 1897. He was one of eight 104th Illinois soldiers to be awarded the Medal of Honor for bravery during the War (the others being Private Richard J. Gage, Lieutenant Colonel Douglas Hapeman, Corporal Lemuel F. Holland, Private George L. Houghton, Sergeant George Marsh, Private Oscar Slagle, and Private Reuben S. Smalley).
