Mrs. D.E. "Grandmother" Henderson, probably the oldest and one of the best known pioneering women of the southwest, passed away this afternoon at the age of 95, following an illness of two week's duration.
The death of the venerable lady occurred at the resident of her daughter, Mrs. David L. Edwards of Globe, with whom she had made her home for many years.
Mrs. Henderson, who had resided in Texas and New Mexico, where her husband, the late John Henderson, was a merchant, came to Gila county in 1887 and has resided here continuously since that time. Mr. Henderson died in 1888.
The body of Mrs. Henderson will be buried beside that of her husband, in the Globe cemetery.
The deceased was the mother of 10 children, five of whom survive. They are George Henderson of Globe, Jasper Henderson of Compton, Calif., Mrs. Martha Ellis of Miami and Mrs. Amanda Turnkett of New Mexico, in addition to her daughter with whom she made her home.
There are between 50 and 60 direct descendants of Mrs. Henderson residing in this vicinity, one of whom is Sheriff J. Alf Edwards, at whose mother's home the aged lady died.
No funeral arrangements have been made.
