Indian Wars Medal of Honor Recipient. An Irish immigrant, he received the award from US Army General William T. Sherman on July 18, 1877 in a ceremony at a military camp by the confluence of the Tongue and Yellowstone Rivers, Montana Territory, for his actions as a sergeant with Company E, 5th US Infantry, US Army, in the Indian Campaigns near Cedar Creek, Montana Territory, from October 21, 1876 until January 8, 1877. His Medal of Honor citation simply reads: "Gallantry in action."
