Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He served during the Civil War in Company G, 15th Indiana Volunteer Infantry, being mustered in as a Sergeant on June 14, 1861. Commissioned 2nd Lieutenant on January 1, 1863, he was awarded the CMOH for his bravery during the Battle of Missionary Ridge, Tennessee on November 25, 1863, with his citation reading "Seized the colors from the color bearer, who had been wounded, and, exposed to a terrible fire, carried them forward, planting them on the enemy's breastworks". His Medal was awarded to him on February 15, 1897. He was one of three 15th Indiana Infantry soldiers to be awarded the Medal of Honor for bravery during the Civil War (the others being Sergeant George L. Banks and Chaplain John M. Whitehead).
