Richard D. "Dick" DeVore, 79, of Wood River died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2011, at Bella Vista Senior Living in Mesa, Ariz.

Dick was born Nov. 27, 1931, in Wood River to Dutch and Helen (Mailander) DeVore.

Survivors are: wife, Patricia Cooper; daughters and son-in-law, Cynthia and Mark Switzer of St. Louis, Mo., and Deborah DeVore and her special friend, Barry Rogers of Mesa, Ariz.; sons and daughters-in law, Michael and Jody DeVore of Grand Island, Matthew and Lisa DeVore, and Curtis and Nancy DeVore, all of Wood River; sisters, Darlene McLey of Wood River and Beverly Becker of Grand Island; grandchildren, Nicole Hicken and Lindsey DeVore of Grand Island, Katie and Meghan Switzer of St. Louis, Mo., Mercedes, Madison, Nicholas, Cheyenne, Danielle, and Dillon DeVore, all of Wood River and great-grandson, Brennan Hicken.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Mark.

Dick graduated from Wood River High School in 1949.

After attending Business College he enlisted in the US Air Force in 1950 and was stationed at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Miss. While there he met his future wife, Patricia Cooper of New Orleans, La., and they were united in marriage on Aug. 7, 1954, in Gulfport, Miss. He was honorably discharged in 1954 from the Air Force.

Dick's career and passion was farming and agriculture, which he was involved with until his retirement in 2001. During that time he also owned a Gambles store in Wood River from 1960-1966 and was a substitute mail carrier with the US Post Office. In addition to his own operation, he was actively involved in many projects that affected agriculture.

Since his retirement he has been enjoying his vacation home in Mesa, Ariz.

Dick was elected as mayor of Wood River in 1980 and served for eight years. He also was a member of the city council from 1972-1980. One project that was important to him was the paving of the streets of Wood River, which occurred during his time on the Council and as Mayor.

Dick was involved in many organizations including the American Legion, Lion's Club, South Central Economic Development and was a member of the Wood River Country Club.

After moving to Arizona he became active in his Valle del Oro community working the guard gate, the post office and also belonged to the Moose and Elks clubs.
