Ellen L. Hendricks, 57, of Jasper, passed away peacefully at 6 p.m. May 23, 2010, at her home after an extended illness.

She retired as a public school teacher from Forest Park Junior/Senior High School in Ferdinand, Ind., where she taught history, government, economics, sociology and psychology.

Born in Columbus on Dec. 29, 1952, she was a 1971 graduate of Columbus High School, earned a bachelor of science degree from Ball State University and a master's degree in education from Indiana University.

Ellen taught more than 30 years at Forest Park Junior/Senior High School. She was an award-winning teacher in the state of Indiana and the recipient of a Fulbright Scholarship to China.

She traveled extensively around the United States, Europe and China and was an extreme enthusiast and reader on the history and scholarship of the U.S. presidency and Constitutional democracy.

Ellen was a talented photographer, musician and singer, and was a lover of Broadway musicals and films. She dedicated her professional life to education and personal life to her family and friends. She also contributed to many philanthropic organizations including disaster relief funds, associations for the betterment of human health, the environment, education, animal rights and protection and historical conservation.

Survivors include her father, Gerald F. Hendricks of Ohio; brother, Edwin R. Hendricks of Ohio; sister, Judith A. Cardassilaris of Indiana; brother, Anthony G. Hendricks of Wisconsin (spouse, Darlene Cook); sister, Cynthia S. Sublette of Texas (spouse, Daniel); Michael J. Sublette, nephew, of Kentucky, (spouse, Michelle and children, Garrett and Anna); Shannon L. Crittenden, niece, of Indiana, (spouse, Sean and children, Conor and Cody); Tanya R. Cobb, niece, of Wisconsin, (spouse, Dan and child, Declan); Wendy E. Kleist, niece, of Wisconsin, (spouse, Dr. Troy Kleist); Nicole R. Cardassilaris, niece, of Indiana, (child, Nicholas); Heidi A. Hendricks, niece, of Massachusetts; Matthew R. Hendricks, nephew, of Ohio; and Elizabeth M. Hendricks, niece, of Ohio.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Daniel Hendricks; and her mother, Ruth Malan Hendricks.

In lieu of funeral services, a memorial service will be conducted at Becher Funeral Home in Ferdinand, Ind.

Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. June 26 at Garland Brook Cemetery.
