Mrs. Samuel Sharpe.
After an invalidism prolonged through many months Mrs. Jane (Ballenger) Sharpe passed to her final rest Friday morning, Jamuary 26, 1913, at her home in the vicinity of LaCrosse.
She was the oldest child of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Ballenger and was born in County Clare, Ireland Dec 25, 1835, making her age 78 years and 26 days.
She was a member of the Catholic church and a strong believer in the faith. She came to this country in 1849 and was but fourteen years old at that time. She made the journey across the water with a friend and would have returned later to the mother country but feared the sea voyage. She remained with an aunt at Philadelphia for three years when she journeyed westward to Warsaw, Ill., and was married Aug 2, 1849 to Samuel Sharpe at Keokuk, Iowa. The next four years they spent at Warsaw, then moved to Panola and later to LaCrosse, Ill., locating on the farm where Mr. Sharpe passed away March 6, 1901.
Mr. and Mrs. Sharpe were among the early settlers of Hancock county and prominently identified with the early history of this community contributing their influence toward its moral and social advancement. Eleven children were born to them, who have taken their places among our best citizens and in their turn given support to the promotion of public good. Seven are with us today. Four have passed to the other side, viz. Mary J., Lillie A., Robert J., and Sarah Ellen, the latter in infancy. The surviving members are Mrs. Elizabeth Lionberger and Dennis, of LaHarpe; Mrs. Harriet Chapin and Mrs. Blanch Haigh of [near] LaCrosse; William J., of Warsaw; Samuel A., of Bushnell and Frank J., of Peoria. there are fourteen grandchildren, who were the pride of "Grandma" Sharpe, especially Miss Eunice Sharpe who was raised by her grandparents from the time of her mother's death and with the children gave her the love and tenderest watchfulness and care that could be bestowed on one they loved. Mrs. Sharpe was a great home lover and found her greatest pleasure by her own fireside and in the companionship of her dear ones, while all who crossed her threshold were sure of a warm welcome and abundant hospitality.
Some years ago Mrs. Sharpe's health began to fail and as a degree of health and strength was gained a return of illness would bring added complications. During the last few weeks she steadily declined in spite of the best nursing and medical skill, and her death Friday morning brought sorrow to many besides those of her immediate family.
The funeral occurred at the Catholic church this city Monday morning Father O'Brien of Carthage officiating, after which the remains were interred in LaHarpe cemetery. ~Maiden name also found as Ballenger and Bollinger.
The spelling Sharpe appears on the tombstone, but in census listings from 1860 through 1900, the surname was consistently spelled Sharp. In 1910 - Sharpe.
