Jonathan was the son of Peter Coyier and was married to Eliza Swatman on 31 August 1853. Jonathan fought in the Civil War for the 36th Regiment Wisconsin Infantry. Records indicate that his residence at the time of enlistment was Utica, he enlisted on Feb 29, 1864 and was mustered out on June 7, 1866. He died shortly after the war from injuries suffered in the war. He and Eliza had four children - Edward Bradley, Francis Jonathan, Alice E and Ernest Eugene.

Although the headstone reads a death date of March 15, 1866, his widow Eliza listed it as March 5, 1866, on her Widow's Declaration for Pension or Increase in Pension.
