U.S. Congressman. He attended King’s College New York, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1791 and began to practice in Newark, New Jersey. He a counselor at law in New Jersey in 1796, when he moved to Hamilton, New York, was an associate judge of the court of common pleas of St. Lawrence County, (1811-15) and a member of the New York State Assembly, (1814- 15). In 1817, he was elected as a Federalist to the Fifteenth Congress, serving until 1819. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was again a judge of the court of common pleas, (1820-24, 25-29). At the time of his death, he was one of the commissioners to settle the boundary between Canada and the United States.
