U.S. Congressman. He engaged in farming, the hardware business, the manufacture of rope and was president of the New York Palmyra's Union Agricultural Society. In 1859, he was elected as a Republican to the Thirty-sixth Congress, serving until 1861. While in office he served as chairman for the Committee on Agriculture. Declining to be a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed his former business pursuits until his death at age 75.
