Thirkield Rooks, Sr., died Sunday, Aug. 2, 2009. Mr. Rooks was born March 11, 1925 in Appling County to the late Althia and Henrietta C. Rooks of Appling County. He attended the Baxley Training School in Appling County. In later years, he married Miss Christine Burch. Mr. Rooks was self-employed as a professional landscaper for many years. He was a faithful and dedicated member of Harper Chapel United Methodist Church in Baxley. Mr. Rooks was preceded in death by his wife, Christine Burch Rooks; parents, Mr. and Mrs. Althia Rooks; daughter, Linda R. Gilcrease; granddaughter, Joyce E. Gilcrease; and three brothers and one sister.

Mr. Rooks is survived by his three children, Thirkield Rooks, Jr., Brenda Rooks-Spearman (Huey) and Kayron E. Rooks; four sisters, Althia R. Cray, Evelyn Isom (Isiah), Alretta Wooten (Rufus) and Zelene Burns (Rev. Columbus); four brothers, Rev. D. L. Rooks (Willie Mae), Pernell Rooks (Alene), Roland Rooks (Annie B.) and Norman Rooks (Joanne); sister-in-laws, Joanna Rooks and Ruby Lee Rooks; grandchildren: Reginald, Candice, Leon, Christopher, Calvin, Joey, Stephanie, Sherry, James, Edward and Brett; 15 great-grandchildren; very special friend, Mammie McNeal and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and caring friends also survive.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 6 from Harper Chapel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Columbus Burns, III presiding and eulogy given by Rev. Vicki P. Scott. Interment followed in Baxley Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Oliver Q. Hall, Eddie J. Hall, Lorenzo Rooks, Gregory Wooten, John Jones and Frank L. Gilcrease, Sr.

Honorary pallbearers were Kenneth Rooks, Richard McCall, Edward Rooks, James Moore, Calvin Gilcrease, Leon Gilcrease, Christopher Gilcrease and Carlos Rooks.

Musical selections were rendered by the Rev. Burlester Tillman, Jr. and choir.
