U.S. Congressman, Minnesota Governor. He graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1906, from its law school in 1909, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Dawson, Minnesota. He was president of the Dawson City Council (1910-11), owner-publisher of the Dawson Sentinel (1909-25) and a member of the Minnesota State House of Representatives, (1915-25). In 1925, he was elected as a Republican the 21st Governor of Minnesota, serving until 1931. While in office, a crime commission was formed, as well as a commission of administration and finance, state expenditures were reduced, taxes were controlled and the state government was restructured. After his term, he was elected as a Republican to the Seventy-third and Seventy-fourth Congresses, serving (1933-37). Not a candidate for re-nomination, he served as secretary manager of the National Association of Retail Grocers, (1937-39), on the counsel for the National Association of Retail Druggists, (1938-45) and editor of the National Association of Retail Druggists Journal until his death from a heart attack at age 65.
