The daughter of Caleb & Mary (Cook) Sumner, Tabitha was a Quaker. She married Bowater Burris, prior Quaker, on 24 Jun 1809 in Highland Co OH. Her marriage took place only three months after the family arrived in OH from NC. Tabitha was disowned for marrying out of unity but was eventually reinstated.

Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy, Vol. 5, OH:
Fairfield Monthly Meeting, p. 215-
"1810, 4, 28. Tabitha Burris (formerly Sumner) dis mcd"
[disowned, married contrary to discipline]

Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy, Vol. 5, OH:
Fairfield Monthly Meeting, p. 215-
"1809, 3, 25. Caleb & son, Caleb, roc from Westfield MM, N.C., dtd 1808, 1, 12."
"1809, 3, 25. Mary & daughters, Mary & Tabitha, roc Westfield MM, N.C., dtd 1808, 11, 12."
[received on certificate]

Note: The above records are in the Old Fairfield Quaker Friends Meetinghouse, located in Leesburg, Highland Co OH. The records dated 25 Mar 1809 show Caleb Sr, his wife Mary and two of his daughters received into the Highland Co church after their move from NC. These records led to the identity of Tabitha's parents.

The family of husband Bowater was Quaker. In 1805, four years before he married Tabitha, he was not only disowned, but "removed". This indicates he no longer wanted any affiliation with the Quaker faith, of his own accord.

Tabitha is my 3rd paternal Gr-Grandmother. Many thanks to Julie for Tabitha's tombstone pictures.
