Esther McCrellis (also spelled McCrillis) was the daughter of John Sr. and Margaret (Harvey) McCrellis. One source suggests her mother was John's second wife Sarah Bailey. The date of her birth has not been confirmed, but it most likely was around 1717-18 and she was born in Ireland. Her grandfather John McCrelles brought his five eldest children (after his wife died) to America, arriving in Boston on October 8, 1726. Included in the voyage included John (my 5th great grandfather), William, Martha, Margaret and Mary. Her father John, mother Margaret, and Esther must have also been part of the group. However, one source suggests that her mother Margaret was born in Nottingham, N. H. There appears to be a conflict of facts that is difficult to explain. The family group settled at Nottingham, New Hampshire in 1734 and after living there a short time John, Martha and Mary moved to Colrain, Massachusetts. It was here that he established a homestead and farmed in Franklin County. Her father settled on the Handy Place on North River in what is now known as Elm Grove. Esther spend most of her youth here. Around 1747 she married (1) Archibald Pennell, son of John Pennell of Deerfield on January 25, 1747. The couple had four children: Sarah (born June 30, 1748); Isaac (born March 20, 1750); Esther (born December 24, 1752); and Archibald Pennell Jr (born March 18, 1754). Her husband passed away in Colrain February 12, 1754, a little over a month before his fourth child was born. Esther married (2) Andrew McLucas (Lucas). They had two children: Daniel (born February 7, 1762) and Hannah (born April 6, 1764). Andrew Lucas had also established a farm in the Colrian, Franklin County area and it was here that they raised her six children. Her husband Andrew fought during the French and Indian Wars and Fort Lucas, established on their farm, was named in his honor. It has not been determined when Esther died or was buried, but most likely both Esther and Andrew Sr. are interred in or near Colrain, Massachusetts. Their headstones have not been identified and most likely have decayed with age.
