Irene H. Sabers, 98, died Thursday, May 16th at Avera-McKennan Hospital, Sioux Falls, SD. She was born January 25, 1904 to John and Agnes (Raue) Sabers on a farm near Salem, SD. They moved to town before she started school at St. Mary's. She graduated from Salem High School.
Irene worked as deputy county auditor of McCook County in Salem for 11 years, then attended Nettleton College in Sioux Falls. After graduation in 1934, she started work at Tri-State Electric Co. as a billing clerk and retired in 1972 as assistant secretary-treasurer for the corporation and office manager.
She joined the Sioux Falls Business and Professional Women's Club in 1937 and served in various capacities, including club president and state president. In 1974 she was named "Woman of the Year" and 1997 was given the "Lifetime Dedication Award" by the BPW.
In 1952, she became an Altrusan and served in several capacities, including president, parliamentarian and treasurer, and for 2 years as a member of the district board of directors. She was a member of the Women's Division of the Sioux Falls Chamber of Commerce and in 1973 was elected its first Vice-Chairwoman and remained active after retirement serving as president and district chairwoman.
Her hobbies included travel and needlework. She had traveled in all 50 states, all southern provinces of Canada, throughout Mexico, South America, Bermuda, the Orient and made 6 trips to Europe.
She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, was active in the Altar Society and worked many hours as a volunteer in various charities.
She was the oldest of 10 children and is survived by 4 sisters, Laverne Carey of Mitchell, Angela Cassidy, Lucille Poore and Josephine Coome of Sioux Falls; 1 brother, Robert E. Sabers (Carole Rae) of Sommerfield, FL, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, 3 brothers and 1 sister.
Mass of the Resurrection will be Saturday, May 18th, 10:00 A.M., at St. Mary's Church. Visitation will begin Friday 4:00 with a Scripture Service at 7:00 followed by a Catholic Daughter Rosary at Barnett-Lewis Funeral Home. Burial will be Saturday at 2:00 at St. Mary's Cemetery in Salem.
