IA CalvaryCyrus was the son of Cyrus Earl who married Ruth Montgomery on December 8th, 1815 in Harpersfield, Ashtabula County, Ohio.
The family resided in Thompson Township in Gueaga County, Ohio at the time of his older sister Marinda Mahala Earl's marriage to Robert Scott.
Cyrus later moved to Iowa and there he enlisted in Company C of the 2nd Iowa Calvary.
As a Private, he participated in the famous Grierson Calvary Raid through Mississippi in April - May of 1863 designed to take attention away from US Grant's approach toward Vicksburg.
