U.S. Congressman, U.S. Senator. He attended Gettysburg College and during World War I, served as a Sergeant in the Ordnance Corps, United States Army, (1918-19). After the war, he became successful in the insurance and real-estate business. He was a member of the Allegany County Road Commission, (1923-30), a member, Maryland State Senate, (1930-34) and chairman of the Maryland State Road Commission, (1938-39). In 1943, he was elected as a Republican to the Seventy-eighth Congress and to the next four succeeding Congresses, serving until 1953. He was then elected to the United States Senate as a Republican, serving (1953-65). An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed his previous business pursuits until his death at age 76. U.S. Senator John Glenn Beall Jr. was his son.
