U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Lowville Academy, became a teacher and served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the US Army during the War of 1812. After the war, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1817 and practiced law in Lowville, New York. He was a member of the New York State Senate, (1827-28), acting New York Lieutenant Governor, in 1828 and supreme court commissioner, in 1830. In 1831, he was elected as a Jacksonian to the Twenty-second Congress, serving until 1833. After his term, he was again supreme court commissioner, member of the New State Assembly, (1835-36) and District Attorney of Lewis County, (1840-45). Due to ill health, he retired from public service and practiced law until his death at age 85.
