US Congressman. He attended Lowville Academy, was a teacher in that institution and engaged in business as a hardware merchant. He served as school commissioner of Lewis County, (1865-75) a member of the New York Assembly, (1879-81) and as clerk of the assembly, (1884-90). In 1893, he was elected as a Republican to the Fifty-third Congress and to the next three succeeding Congresses. He served until his accidental death from injuries received in a fall from a window of the Grand Union Hotel in New York City, at age 56.
