U.S. Congressman. He attended Claverack Academy, engaged in the lumber, coal business and banking, was member of the Board of Supervisors of Ulster County, (1895-97) and was member of the New York State Assembly in 1897. He was director of the First National Bank in 1900, the Kingston Trust Company in 1921and was president of the Board of Education Highland, New York, (1908-26). In 1925, he was elected as a Republican to the Sixty-ninth Congress and to the next three succeeding Congresses, serving until 1933. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed his former business interests. He died in an automobile accident at age 67.
