Thomas Sawyer, known as "Tom," was a Captain with the 29th Commando Regiment Royal Auxiliery, serving with the 7th Sphinx Commando Battery. He was deployed to Afghanistan as a Fire Support Team Commander, attached to the Zulu Company of the Royal Marines. He was from Hertfordshire, England. He died at the age of 26, while in a joint operation with a Danish Battle Group and the Afghan National Army, clearing compounds in a known Taliban stronghold. He was killed with a fellow Marine Comrade, Corporal Daniel Winter, in an explosion. He trained at Sandhurst, England, earning the Queen's Commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in April of 2002. He was an avid sportsman who competed for the Army in skiing. He followed in his father's footsteps, becoming an Air Corp Cadet in his teens.
