Richard Allen Peery died 13 Feb 1931, at home in Jonesboro, following a heart attack, aged 74 years, 1 month, 20 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. His funeral was at the Baptist church.
He came to Union County from Jefferson County when a young man. He was educated at Ewing College in Franklin County. He lived on a farm near Reynoldsville and in Jonesboro. He was a lawyer and county surveyor at his death. He received the largest fee ever paid to a lawyer in Union County. He made the Peery addition to Jonesboro. He married Rosa Garrison. They had eight children, of whom four died in infancy. A daughter, Mrs. James Brown, also preceded him in death.
He left a widow, two daughters, Mable Peery, at home, and Mrs. Everett Newton, of Jonesboro; one son, Cornelius Peery, a law student in Chicago; and eight grandchildren.
