He was the only son of William Barrington Shelton and Ruth (Evans) Shelton. From childhood forward, Doc had a love of all things related to sports, hunting and fishing. It is a love he carried with him throughout his life. After graduating from Mart High School, where he played varsity football, Doc attended Baylor University. He finished his undergraduate degree in three years, graduating in 1955.

Doc received his medical training at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, graduating in 1958. During his time there, Doc married Emily Barbee. They were married 51 years.

He began his medical career with an internship and pediatric residency in Oklahoma City, Okla., followed by a private practice in pediatrics in Waco. Later, he found his true calling in radiology/radiation oncology while serving as chief resident during a residency at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas.

After serving as a clinical instructor in radiology at Louisiana State University School of Medicine in Shreveport, La., Doc and his family moved to Lufkin, Texas, in 1968. It was his passion for the outdoors that drew him to Lufkin, but it was his love of the people here that sustained his service at Memorial Health System of East Texas for the balance of his career as a Board Certified Radiologist/Radiation Oncologist. During his tenure at Memorial, Doc held many esteemed positions including, among others, Chief of Staff; President, Angelina County Medical Society; District Director, American Cancer Society; and Associate Medical Director, Hospice in the Pines, Lufkin. In 1989, Doc was elected Employee of the Year for Memorial, for 22 years of dedicated service to the people of East Texas as a faithful physician and friend. At that time he was the only physician to be so honored. Perhaps most notably, however, Doc was instrumental in creating the Arthur Temple Sr. Regional Cancer Center, where he served as Medical Director from its inception in 1989 until his retirement.

Since 1994, Memorial has annually hosted Dr. Bill Shelton's "Totally Awesome Fishing Adventure" to benefit cancer patients. The tournament raises thousands of dollars to provide aid to patients who require assistance with purchasing pain medications, medical aids, and even gas for transportation to bring them to the Arthur Temple Sr. Regional Cancer Center. Doc never sought recognition for his work, rather he labored quietly and effectively to bring to Lufkin and East Texas medical programs responsible for saving thousands of lives.

In service to his community, Doc was recognized on Jan. 30, 2001, as the recipient of the Angelina Award, the highest award given by the Angelina County Chamber of Commerce for lifetime contributions to the community. Doc has received many local and state awards, including being voted one of Texas' top 10 fishermen (called the All-State Bass Fishing Team) six years. He fished in the Texas State Bass Tournament for 41 years. And he has been voted a member of Texas Top 50 Fishermen for 20 years. Doc has received the Willard Grimes Award for Conservationist of the Year given by the Angelina Wildlife Association, as well as the Mac Payne Memorial Award, the highest award given by the Texas Association of Bass Clubs. He and Emily were a founding couple of His & Hers Bass Club. They fished for over 35 years. He was also a member of Saturday Bass Anglers. He has been one of the Top Six Fishermen in the Lufkin Bass Club for 37 consecutive years.

Doc is survived by his devoted wife, Emily; daughters, Kathleen Shelton, Emily Watts and Rebecca Chance and husband, Jeff; grandsons, Chip Watts and Will Chance; granddaughters, Lindsey Watts and Caroline Chance; sister-in-law, Claudia Parrish and husband, John; nephew, Mark Parrish and wife, Klara and their children.

In his final hours, he was surrounded by his loving family. He was a faithful member of Lufkin's First Baptist Church where he served in many roles, including those of Chairman of Deacons and Chairman of the Missions Committee. Doc's faith in Christ was evidenced by his service to others throughout his life. It is in this knowledge that we are comforted, for he is certainly in heaven with our Creator.
