Lance Cpl. Joseph R. Giese, 24, of Winder, Ga., died Jan. 7 while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. Ryan was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C. Ryan attended Central Gwinnett High School and was scheduled to graduate with the Class of 2005 before relocating to Las Vegas, NV and earning his high school diploma. Ryan attended Georgia Military College before deciding to join the Marine Corps. He enlisted in July 2007 and was promoted to Lance Corporal in September 2008. He deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom from September 2008 to April 2009. In July 2010, he deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. His awards include the National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal. Ryan leaves behind his wife, Brittany Allum Giese of Monroe; his mother, Connie Wascovich of Winder; his father, Larry Giese and sister Brandi Giese of Henderson, NV; his sister Alison Leopard, brother-in-law Mitch Leopard, nephew Carson Teems, niece Emery Ryan Leopard of Cartersville; his sister Jennifer Madden, brother-in-law Jeremy Madden, niece Miah Madden of Alpharetta; his grandfather, George Wascovich of Atlanta; his mother-in-law Kimberly Johnson and brothers-in-law David Johnson and Brian Allum of Monroe; and many uncles, aunts, and cousins.
