Our beloved Mother and Grandmother, Joy Dorine Cadwallader, passed away on Sunday, January 17, 2010 in Boise, at the age of 86.

Joy was born on April 17, 1923 in Sioux City, Iowa to Otto and Elnora Dierking.

She spent her childhood in Iowa, graduating from South Sioux City High School in 1940.

Shortly after graduation her father moved the family to Los Angeles. It was there that she met the love of her life Robert Cadwallader. They were married in 1946 and lived in the Los Angeles area for several years where they were blessed with two daughters, Cathy and Sherry. Later they moved to Ellensburg, WA where their son Dave was born. After living in Ellensburg and Ketchikan, Alaska for a few years, Joy and Bob moved their family to Boise where they lived for 50 years.

Joy and Bob took advantage of all Idaho had to offer. They loved to go camping, fishing, and hunting together. Joy was an avid BSU fan and season ticket holder clear back to the days of the wooden bleachers. She loved attending the sporting events of her children, grandchildren, and even later her great grandchildren. She was often known to call her grandsons to see if they were watching a certain game on TV, and she would comment on the bad calls or great plays. She loved going to the Old Time Fiddlers Contest in Weiser with Bob and their friends. She was not as musically inclined as their friends, but the life of the party so they concocted an instrument for her to play—a wash tub with a broom stick and string to strum along. Quite the instrument and she laughed and played it with enthusiasm.

Joy often traveled back to Ketchikan where she and Bob had lived twice (once pre-statehood!) to visit good friends and enjoy the fishing and outdoors. She would go out on the boat with Bob and his fishing buddies and often out-fished them.

More than anything she loved having her family around her.

Joy is survived by her children: Cathy (Ron) Balderrama, Sherry Brant, Dave (Marilyn) Cadwallader; her grandchildren: Debbie (Scott) Vermeer, Diane (Denny) Bramble, Ryan (Kami) Brant, Lesley Brant, Ben (Marce) Cadwallader and Joe Cadwallader and 9 great grandchildren; brothers, Jerry (Betty) Dierking and Loren (Margot) Dierking, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Joy was preceded in death by her husband Bob, her parents, and her brother Gerald.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Lisa Law and the staff at MSTI Meridian as well as the staff at Wynwood@Riverplace for their care of our dear Mother.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Mountain States Tumor Institute, Meridian.

Memorial services will be Sunday, January 24, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at Summers Funeral Homes, 1205 W. Bannock Street, Boise.

"There's magic in a Mother's touch, and sunshine in her smile. There's love in everything she does to make our lives worthwhile. We can find both hope and courage just by looking in her eyes. Her laughter is a source of joy, her works are warm and wise. There is a kindness and compassion to be found in her embrace, And we see the light of heaven shining from our Mother's face."
