Eugene Capellas Dies; Teacher and Educator
Hilo, Hawaii, Aug. 17 - Eugene S. Capellas, onetime president of
the Territorial Senate and a longtime Big Island educator, died in his
sleep at his home late yesterday. He was 82.
A staunch Republican, he was active in politics until the last few
months.
He was a frequent visitor at Board of Supervisors meetings and was
active in the G.O.P. conventions this spring
He died at his home, at 5:45 p.m., after an
illness of six weeks.
Mr. Capellas spent 47 years in the Territorial school system, the
last 43 as principal at Hakalau.
He was County chairman of the Republican Party for 10 years and
entered the race for Territorial Senate in 1944, the year of his
retirement from the school system.
He was elected Senate president his first term in 1944 as a
compromise candidate.
In all, he served eight years in the Senate.
He introduced as his first bill a measure that resulted in
construction of the County library here.
He also supported legislation for Kulani Prison Camp, the Hale Nani
Police Academy and the Hilo Municipal Golf Course.
Mr. Capellas was born in the Azores on Feb. 26, 1880.
When he was three, the family moved to Maui, where his father was a
sugar plantation worker.
He received his primary teaching certificate at the age of 17 and
taught four years at Keelahou, Kula, Maui.
He came to the Big Island as Hakalau principal four years later, in
1901.
In 1903 he married Eliza Dos Reis, whom he';d met on Maui. She
also taught at Hakalau until their retirement.
Tow of their nine children are school principals and a daughter is
a teacher.
Lawrence Capellas is principal of Hilo High School, and Eugene Jr.
is principal of Walakea-Uka School. Mrs. Cecelia Muirhead is a teacher
in Pahala.
Mr. Capellas is survived also by the widow, another son, Donald of
Honolulu, four other daughters, Mrs. Emil Piedvache of Kailua, Oahu,
Mrs. Francis Nunes and Mrs. Earl Grune of Hilo, and Mrs. Charles Nash of
Los Angeles; a sister, and seven great-grandchildren.
Rosary will be recited at 7:30 pm today at Homelani Cemetery, and a
requiem mass will be offered at 11 am tomorrow at St. Joseph's Church.
Burial will be in the family plot in Homelani Cemetery.
The three sons and three sons-in-law will be active pallbearers.
Honorary pallbearers will include Big Island Police Chief Anthony
Paul; Thomas Sakakkihara; William (Jazz) Belknap of Maui; Andrew T.
Spaulding; County Auditor Lawrence De Mello; Dr. William Bergen; George
Schumacher and Fred Schumacher.
