Reed Spencer, 83, of Galbreath Creek Road, Bryson City, died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2011, at MedWest-Harris hospital.

Services will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 7, in the chapel of Melton Funeral Home with the Revs. Larry Foster and Ken Lowdermilk officiating. The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service.

Services also will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 8, at Midview Baptist Church, Kings Mountain, of which he was a member and inactive deacon, with the Revs. Robbie Stinson and Ken Faulkenberry officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Burial will be at Mountain Rest Cemetery. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

He was born Aug. 20, 1927, in Landace, a son of the late Ewell Jesse and Mary Armstrong Spencer. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he was a former employee of Westinghouse and Herron Electronics.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Herron Spencer, who died in 2005; and one sister, Jesse Margaret Gladden.

Surviving are four daughters, Deborah Spencer Jones and Freddie Spencer Frizzell, both of Sylva, Sherry Spencer King of Easley, S.C., and Kelly Dora Spencer of the home; nine grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
