Grand Rapids Herald, Thursday, June 8, 1950 - "SMALLEY - John E. Smalley, aged 85, of 2160 Four Mile Rd., NE, passed away Wednesday evening. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Bertha Loveland; two sons, James Edward and Leicester John Smalley; one granddaughter, Doris Smalley; three sisters, Mrs. Kate Christensen, Mrs. Minnie Talbot and Mrs. Harry Van Poppering, all of Grand Rapids; one brother, George J. Smalley of Pensacola, Fla.; several nieces and nephews; two step-daughters, Mrs. Madge Slawson of Swartz Creek, Mich., and Mrs. Bernice Allen of Grand Rapids; one step-son, Roy Johnson of Middleville; one step-grandchild and several step-grandchildren. Mr. Smalley reposes at the Van Strien-Alman Funeral Home, where services will be held at 2:30 Saturday afternoon, Interment Fairplains Cemetery."
