THERMOPOLIS – Loretta Agnes Hyatt, 88, of Thermopolis and formerly of Hyattville, Wyo. died on Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2011 at Hot Springs County Memorial Hospital in Thermopolis.

Loretta was born to Alois Deermer and Theresa (Schmaderer) Deermer on Nov. 30, 1922 in Stuart, Neb. She was one of eight children and spent her early years on a farm near Stuart. Before starting school her family moved to a farm north of Newport, Neb. She attended the Kirkwood School, a one-room school for grades 1-8. Her father died when she was eight years old.

Her mother and the children then moved to another farm north of Newport and she attended the Plainview School along with 30 other children in grades 1 to 8. She stayed home a year before starting high school in Newport. While in high school, she enjoyed playing basketball and always held a lead role in school plays.

Upon graduation, she worked as a nurse's aide in the Bassett Hospital. She had earned a business scholarship for college, so she decided to go to Grand Island, Neb. for a year. When her oldest brother Albert died, she returned home to help her mother.

In the early 1940s, she noticed an ad for help at the Glenn L. Martin Aircraft Plant in Omaha, Neb., so she took the train to Omaha and was lucky enough to get a job at the plant as a "Rosie the Riveter." She worked at the plant until the end of World War II.

Loretta decided at that time that she would go into nurses' training at St. Elizabeth Hospital School of Nursing in Lincoln, Neb. and graduated in 1948. Becoming an RN had always been a dream of hers. She worked at St. Elizabeth's for a year and then told her friends that she was going to go to Wyoming to hopefully find an "educated cowboy."

She moved to Worland in 1949 to work for the local hospital and soon after met her "educated cowboy", P. Milton Hyatt from Hyattville after he was admitted to the hospital and was one of her patients. The couple was married on May 22, 1950 at the Catholic Church in Worland and moved to the Hyatt Ranch at Hyattville where they raised their family of four children.

Loretta loved being a rancher's wife, helping with all aspects of the ranching operation including moving cows, checking heifers, moving pipe and going to meetings. She was a member of the Wyoming Cowbelles. They lived on the ranch until it was sold in 1991. They moved into Hyattville and stayed there until they moved to Thermopolis in 2000 after Milton suffered a stroke.

She loved spending time with her grandchildren by following their sporting events, musical concerts and babysitting them. She loved the Denver Broncos.
Loretta was a member of St. Francis and St. Phillip's Catholic Churches and participated in bible study groups. She loved her Lord and the Catholic faith.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Milton in 2008; her son Samuel Hyatt in 2004; her brothers Albert, Ben and Edward; and her sister Mary Deermer.

Loretta is survived by her children; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; her siblings; her sister-in-law; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The Vigil and Rosary Service will be held Friday, Jan. 7, 2011 at 7 p.m. at St. Francis Catholic Church in Thermopolis. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, Jan. 8, 2011 at 10 a.m. at the church, followed by Rite of Committal at Riverview Memorial Gardens in Worland at 1:30 p.m.
