Graveside services for Shen will be 11 a.m. Monday, May 9, at the National Cemetery, Arsenal Island. Anyone wishing to attend the graveside should be at the Van Hoe Funeral Home, East Moline, by 10:30 a.m. A Funeral Mass was held Wednesday, May 4, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Pensacola, with Father Dominic Phan Sa as celebrant. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Covenant Hospice of Pensacola or the Council on Aging of Pensacola.
Shen was born Jan. 24, 1928, in Decatur, Ill.
He was a Veteran who served in the U.S. Army, stationed in Japan in the late 1940's. Shen retired after 38 years of government service at the Rock Island Arsenal as a contractor industrial relations officer in the procurement directorate in August 1985. In 1991, Shen moved to Pensacola, where he worked for the Council on Aging, delivering Meals on Wheels, and the Jackson Hewitt Tax Service.
Survivors (and spouses) include his wife of 53 years, Loretta; and sons, Lawrence (Peggy), Lee's Summit, Mo., Roger (Sandy), Bettendorf, Kenneth (Shirley), Ocean Springs, Miss.; daughters, Sharon deVarona (Jan Ehemann), Springhill, Tenn., Karen Eyer (William), Snellville, Ga., Roxanne Spurgetis (Frank), Moline; sister, Elizabeth Smutnak (Cy), Gardnerville, Nev.; sisters-in-law, Louise and June; 10 grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry L. and Elizabeth Mallon; brothers, Richard (Minnie), William (Chris), James and Daniel; and sister, Mary Rita Cook (John).
Shen always said he would not want anyone to weep at his passing, but rejoice, for he is in a much better place.
