Sarah Florence Curley was a daughter of John Edward Curley and Emily Virginia Neepier Curley. Her siblings were an older sister Ella, a younger brother William Edward, and a younger sister, Delma. (A sister, Edith Jane, died in infancy 7 months before Florence was born.) Before her marriage, Florence was a milliner who had her own shop in Baltimore. She was assisted by her friend Nannie Laveille from Calvert Co. (Miss Laveille later married J. Peterson Dorsey.) She married John Gibbons, also of Calvert Co., when she was 34 years old, having previously been engaged to another man.* Her only child, Dorothy Spencer Gibbons, was born a year later. She also raised a niece, Delma Schoene, whose mother could not care for her. Some who knew her reported that Florence usually looked sad. She died at the age of 55 from "a creeping paralysis," according to her daughter.

*Her preservation of photographic portraits of a man named Glenn Goodpasture hints that he may have been the man.
