The Hendricks Pioneeer – April 13, 1967

Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 1 at 2 p.m. in Marble Lutheran church for Austin H. Appelen who passed away at the Canby hospital on Wednesday March 29 at the age of 79 years after having been in ill health for about three years.
Austin, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Halvor Appelen, was born in Marble township on Sept. 17, 1887 and attended country school in Lincoln county. He married Mary Peterson on November 27, 1917 in St. Stephens parsonage, Canby. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith by Rev. Olaf Hoel.
Mr. Appelen was engaged in farming during his entire lifetime, and since 1952 had made his residence in Canby. He had served on both town and church boards for several years.
Officiating at the funeral service was Rev. Lloyd Kallevig, who also sang several selections accompanied by Mr. Carvell Johnson. Interment was in the Marble church cemetery. Pallbearers were LeRoy Anderson, William Anderson, Andrew Appelen, William, Henry, and Carl Nelson.
Surviving the deceased besides his wife are the following brothers and sisters: Tobias, Canby; Mrs. Annie Holm, Moritz, S.D.; Mrs. Lillie Husby, Canby; and Mrs. Agnes Miller, Canby. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.
