Lumber tycoon William O. Goodman came to Chicago from Pennsylvania at age 20. He worked first as a bookkeeper and then as a lumber salesman. Goodman eventually started investing in lumber, and in 1878 organized the Sawyer-Goodman Lumber Co., of which he eventually became president. Goodman had this mausoleum built as a tribute to his playwright son Kenneth, who died in 1918 of influenza while serving as a lieutenant at Great Lakes Naval Training Station. The Goodman tomb was designed by Howard Van Doren Shaw, who used a similar architectural style in 1925 when he designed the Goodman Theatre, another memorial to Kenneth Goodman from his father.
