A graduate of Dartmouth College (1830) and Andover Theological Seminary (1834), Rev Smith answered the call to minister on Nov 2, 1834 to the Fourteenth Street Presbyterian Church in New York City. For 29 years he remained a pastor to this congregation which included many prominent and influential citizens; he published several works and lectured frequently as professor of pastoral theory to Union Theological Seminary students. He resigned his pastorate in October 1863 to take on the mantle of presidency at Dartmouth College.
As a financial provider he met with unprecedented success and his personal influence secured many important gifts and benefactions to the College. His administration greatly expanded the College's reputation and enrollment increased. Students treated him reverently and respectfully and he was well-liked.
His health began to suffer in the winter of 1869 and he spent several months recuperating in Jamaica. Although he was able to return to his post for some years, he once again became ill in February 1877 and tendered his resignation.

Inscription
He was for twenty nine years pastor in the city of New York and for thirteen years president of Dartmouth College
Things which are seen are temporal
But the things which are not seen are eternal
Thanks be to God which giveth us the victory
Through our Lord Jesus Christ
