James Horning

CHAMPAIGN – On Jan. 4, 2011, after a long battle with emphysema, James D. Horning passed away at his home in Champaign. He was two days away from his 81st birthday.

Born on a farm in Caldwell County, Ky., on Jan. 6, 1930, a son of John and Virginia Horning, Jim grew up at the age of 9 enjoying the sport of hunting quail and rabbits. Over the years, he hunted quail and grouse in many states, including Arizona, Kentucky, Michigan, Illinois, Arkansas, Wisconsin and Texas.

He was an avid bowler in Champaign for many years. Also, he enjoyed playing baseball as a young man, and in later years he enjoyed watching all sports on TV.

On May 19, 1956, he married Dorothy Thompson in Lincoln Park, Mich., and they have been married for over 54 years. He was a loving husband.

Jim and his wife Dorothy came to Champaign from Michigan in 1961. He joined the real estate firm Bash and Lambert Inc. as a real estate agent. Later he worked at Woodworth and Sons Trucking, and Champaign Asphalt Co. before retiring.

Jim served in the U.S. Army starting in 1951 and was stationed in Alaska for 18 months.

He enjoyed spending winters at their condo in Vero Beach, Fla.

Jim was a 32nd-degree Mason in good standing of the Scottish Rite Bodies in the Valley of Danville.

His wife, Dorothy; niece, Jill Horning; nephews, Wendell Roberts and Randy Horning; great-niece, Lorie Hays; and great-nephew, Craig Roberts, survive him.

He was preceded in death by five sisters, Lillian La Londe, Hazel Schniers, Mabel Formanek, Mildred Chandler and Willie Belle Roberts; and one brother, Medley Horning.

A memorial visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon Friday, Jan. 7, 2011, with a service at noon at Morgan Memorial Home, 1304 Regency Drive West, Savoy. Chaplain Tony Crouch will officiate. Burial will be in Beech Grove Cemetery, Caldwell County, Ky.
