Fire Started by Her Cigarette Causes Death
The News (Frederick, MD) January 12, 1933

Rockville, Md. — Burns received Tuesday when her clothing caught fire as she was lighting a cigarette resulted late last night in the death of Miss Lutie Griffith, 45, of Baltimore.

Miss Griffith was sitting on the side of a bed at the home of her sister, Mrs. T. Magruder Veirs, here [Rockville], when she dropped a lighted match. Instantly her clothing was in flames and before her sister's husband, who was working in the yard, could reach her and extinguish the flames, she was badly burned.

She was removed to a Washington hospital where she died.

Miss Griffith was a member of a prominent Montgomery county family. She was a daughter of the late Charles G. Griffith and is survived by three brothers and five sisters.
