James Thomas Ross, 78, died Tuesday at his home. He had been ill for more than 11 years following a stroke of paralysis but had been seriously ill only for the last several months.

He was born near Coulterville March 30, 1855. He and Miss Laetitia Sands were married near Tilden in 1878. They lived in Southern Illinois and Kansas before coming to Decatur. They moved here from Sparta more than 25 years ago. He was a painter and decorator until he retired because of failing health. He was a member of the Presbyterian church.

He leaves his widow and the following children, Thomas A. Ross of Nashville,Tenn, William R.Ross, Aaron, Iri,and James E. and Mrs. Lynn Williams, Mrs. Norbert Dempster, all of Decatur. Two sons died in infancy and one son, Oscar died in 1928.
He leaves two brothers, Alex Ross and William J. Ross of Coulterville and three sisters, Mrs. Jane Fullerton of Marissa, Mrs. Nancy Curtis of Dunlap, Kan. and Mrs. Mary Prest of Tilden. He leaves 18 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
