Lewis C. Benfield, Jr. of Davisburg died on Saturday, Jan. 1, 2011 at Manistee Medical Care Facility in Manistee, Michigan after a long battle with cancer. He was 86.

Lewie was born on April 18, 1924 in Riverdale, Michigan, the son of Ella Mae (Hardy) and Lewis C. Benfield, Sr. He was the youngest of six children, and served in the U.S. Army, stationed in Berlin, Germany at the end of WWII. In 1951, he married Lois Jean Nichols and settled in Davisburg. He was a gifted craftsman and cabinet maker, and served as Springfield Township Building Inspector for over 25 years. He enjoyed fishing in Ontario, Canada with his sons, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and also enjoyed early morning visits to the "coffee table" with several of his good friends. He attended the First Baptist Church and participated in prayer meetings at Hope Alive Assembly, both in Holly.

He is survived by his wife, Lois Jean Benfield of Traverse City; his sons, Rex (Kristin) Benfield of Free Soil, and Ned (Lin) Benfield of Traverse City; grandchildren, Jay Benfield (Christine Darcy) of Stafford, VA, and Daniel and Elia Benfield of Traverse City; his great-grandchildren Alyssa, Zachary, Joshua and Matthew Benfield, all residing in Virginia; several nieces and nephews including Nancy Cummings of Florida, and John Young of North Carolina; his dear friend, Connie Gilson, and best buddy and partner in adventures, Roger Pratt. He was preceded in death by his parents, and siblings.
