Mallie was born in Merrimac, Massachusetts (South Amesbury, at the time) and grew up living in Amherst, MA, then New York City. Her first home, at an early parish of her husband's (Rev. Charles Henry McClellan "Mac" 1843-1916) was in Butler, PA, then they settled permanently in Lakewood, New Jersey, spending part of the summers in Jefferson, New Hampshire. Her husband's ill health (pernicious anemia, for which there was no cure until antibiotics) led him to spend much time away from home in treatment places, like mineral spring spas, which resulted in great piles of love letters, containing news about little "Tottie," then "Malleville" as she grew older. When Malleville, my grandmother married (Frederick Hollis Howard, M.D.)in 1901, and moved to Williamstown, Massachusetts, visiting back and forth was frequent, as Mallie was fond of caring for her grandchildren, Edgerton, born in 1902, and my father, Paul, (later they adopted a girl, Carol, b 1914) After Mac died, at some point Mallie moved up to Williamstown, and was at times in charge of the household as my grandmother went off on her adventures, the most courageous of which was driving soldiers in her Red Cross ambulance, first in New York (from ships arriving from overseas to "military debarkation hospitals" around the city) and then in 1918 in France, where her husband was involved with an Evacuation Hospital, getting the wounded soldiers out of France (Bacarrat, North Eastern France) at the end of the war. Gaga was an accomplished horsewoman in her teens, and so when cars were invented, she jumped right into one! and was the first woman in Berkshire County to get a driver's license. Mallie and Mac were so proud of their daughter, their hearts were bursting out of their chests for her, whatever she did!
