Eula Inez Dodson Bagwell, age 97, departed this life on Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2001, at the Carlisle Nursing Center in Due West. The daughter of James Fletcher and Dora Matilda Martin Dodson, she was born near Due West, S.C. (Abbeville County), on Aug. 24, 1903. She was descended from several of the earliest European families in upper South Carolina. These included the Dodsons who came from Virginia and helped to found Turkey Creek Baptist Church, the Martins and Dunns from Northern Ireland who were among the early Presbyterians in the Due West-Donalds area, the Richeys and Shirleys from Pennsylvania, the Elgins and Kays from Maryland. She was a distant cousin of anti-bellum leader, John C. Calhoun and former president, Jimmy Carter.
She graduated from Donalds High School where she was an honor student and she attended Erskine College. She was a teacher at the Old Columbia School at Princeton, SC (Greenville County) before her marriage to William Francis Bagwell of Donalds in 1921.
For a number of years they lived in Greenville, SC and later in Hodges, SC, where her husband was a business and church leader, as well as mayor for many years before his death in 1980. For many years, she was a Sunday School teacher and Women's Missionary Union leader in Greenville at Poe Baptist Church and later in Hodges at Providence Baptist Church. She was also active in school and community affairs. She was predeceased by two sisters, Lois (Mrs. Clifton Stone) and Lucille (Mrs. Leland Walker) and two brothers, Clifton L. Dodson and William Earle Dodson.
She is also survived by two children, Katherine (Mrs. M. Lewis Coleman) of Lakeland, Fl, and Dr. William F. Bagwell of Donalds, SC; a daughter, Louise (Mrs. Neal Mabrey) predeceased her in 1973. Also surviving her are four grandchildren and a number of great and great-great-grandchildren, plus nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held 1-2pm today at Pruitt Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 2pm today at Pruitt Funeral Home with the Rev. Bennie Ridlehoover officiating. Burial will follow in the Bagwell family plot at Donalds Baptist Church. Please omit flowers.
