A Masonic services for Mr. Ernest Ware "E. W." Hammons will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, April 20, 2010 in the Chapel of Hixson Brothers, Pineville. Military graveside services with burial will be in Pollock Cemetery.

Mr. Hammons, 99, of Pollock passed away Saturday, April 17, 2010 at Dubuis Hospital.

Ernest lived from 1912 until 1918 in Amite County, Mississippi where he started to school. After his family returned to the homestead, E. W. attended local school in the Sand Hill community and graduated as valedictorian at Copiah-Lincoln Junior College High School in Wesson. He received a B. S. Degree in education from Mississippi State College in 1936 and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U. S. Army upon graduation. Later, he received a Master's Degree +30 hours from LSU.


E. W. was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War and was twice awarded the Bronze Star. He participated in the invasion of Europe on D-Day and in the Battle of the Bulge. He also served as a security officer at General Eisenhower's headquarters at the end of World War II. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel with 28 years of service, 14 years of which were active duty. During his army career, E. W. graduated from Infantry School and taught officer candidates for two years. He graduated from Command and General Staff School and Military Law School. He graduated from Military Intelligence School in Germany and later served for two years as commanding officer of a Military Intelligence School in Alexandria.

Apart from military assignments in the U. S. and Germany, E. W. resided in Pollock, where he taught in the public school. E. W. was a teacher for 30 years and was principal for 3 years. He was selected as Louisiana's Outstanding Vo-Ag Teacher in 1971. He also co-authored a Louisiana school text book on forestry. E. W. was an alderman for the Town of Pollock and served as secretary and treasurer for the Pollock Town Council for 8 years. E. W. was also a member of Anchor Lodge #261 F & AM for over 50 years.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille Blackwell Hammons; parents, Willie D. and Lou Douglas Hammons; brothers, Vernon Hammons, David Hammons, Troy Hammons; sisters, Minnie Hammons, Louise H. King, Evelyn H. Grant, Mary Hammons and Frances H. McKnight.


Those left to cherish his memory include his sons, Ernie Wayne Hammons and wife, Sandra of Pollock; John Toxie Hammons and wife, Su of Atlanta, Georgia, Bruce Elliott Hammons and wife, Jill of West Monroe; daughter, Lou Hammons Craig and husband, Dr. Bruce Craig of Pollock; brothers, Ray Hammons of Tifton, Georgia, Roy Hammons of Brandon, Mississippi; eleven grandchildren, ten great grandchildren; "adopted" daughter, Kathleen Thom and her family.


Friends may call Monday at Hixson Brothers, Pineville from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. and Tuesday from 11 a.m. until service time.
